  • #1594 : Devil driven away by words. (Var.) a) A monk is bothered by the devil with many phantasies until the monk utters the words, “He who is my Lord is thy Lord also.” b) A monk, tempted to fornication, was delivered from the temptation by following the prior’s advice and uttering the words, “ devil, why confessor commands thee to stop tempting me. ” c.) A wicked knight was saved from the devil by saying, “Lord, pity me.” d) A devil says to a holy man that a certain biblical phrase frightens away devils, i.e., “The word was made flesh.” e) A devil in human form is driven away when a woman cries, “Sancta Maria, adjuva me.” (See also: 425, 2578, 3449, 4019, 4746).
