  • #3930 ((4e exemplum)) : Prebend and King Philip. The bishop of Carnoten promised King Philip that he would give him the first prebend that he had. After many became vacant, the king grew indignant. The bishop replied that he had none to give, for he had sold them all. Mensa 26.119 (Dunn, p. 39). (© Frederic C. Tubach)
  • #863 ((1er exemplum)) : Capon to remove anxiety. When King Philip of France has the poor clerks to dinner, he sees a clerk steal a capon. Calling him aside privately, he asks what he has studied. He answers, “Theology.” The king says, “Is it not written, ‘Thou shalt not be anxious for food?’ “He replies, “I want to remove all anxiety.” EdeB # 243; Mensa 4.6, 6.15 (Dunn, p. 22); ML # 92; S.T.: J1396.– Hassell, Nouvelles, pp. 148 151 # 35.
