(Fr.) Un convers cistercien très négligent et insouciant mourrait. Du coup, son corps vira au noir, puis au rouge, comme le feu. Ensuite il devint blanc comme la neige, et finalement fangeux comme les fèces. Le convers alors ressuscita et raconta à toutes les personnes présentes que les changements de son corps représentaient la punition qu’il avait subie : pour sa négligence, on l’avait jeté dans le bitume, dans le feu, dans l’eau glaciale, dans les fèces. Dieu toutefois lui accorda du temps pour racheter sa conduite passée. Le convers mena ensuite une vie sainte.

De conuerso de Důs, qui a mortuis suscitatus, que in penis uiderat, declarauit.

Est domus in episcopatu Cameracensi nomine Důs ordinis Cysterciensis. In hoc conuersus quidam fuit et adhuc est, Walterus nomine, de quo mira uisa sunt et audita. Ueniens ad ordinem, nimis inordinate uixit, de signis otiosis uerbisque superfluis modicum curans et, cum leuis in moribus esset frequenterque regulas silentii frangeret, culpam occultam medicina confessionis curare non curauit. Uolens pius Dominus tam ei quam ceteris per eum ostendere, quantum ei displiceat, si studium religionis professor negligat leuitatibusque intendat, conuersum eundem grauissima infirmitate flagellauit. Qui ad extrema deductus et in matta positus, in oculis totius conuentus exspirauit. Cumque nudatus esset ad lauandum, cepit corpus totum eius ad instar picis nigrescere, deinde post paululum uerti in igneum ruborem et postea candescere ut nix, nouissime autem ad similitudinem fecis turbidum effectum est. Uidentes hac qui aderant, mirati sunt ualde, quid defuncti corporis tam multiplex mutatio portenderet, prorsus ignorantes. Cumque stupidi starent et rei exitum exspectarent, post horas aliquot, qui mortuus fuerat, reuixit, oculos aperiens et ingemiscens. Interrogatus de statu suo respondit: "Audite, fratres, et aduertite! Mores pueriles, leuitates uerborum siue signorum culpam putans esse modicam, quid de hiis sentiendum sit, in tormentis ego miser didici. Quando anima mea egressa est de corpore meo, missa est in picem, et eadem hora, sicut uidistis, ipsum corpus piceum induit colorem. De qua extracta iactata est in ignem feruentissimum, ex quo etiam ipsum corpus rubei coloris effectum est. Cum uero illud uidistis albescere, in aquas gelidas missa est anima mea. Deinde in cacabum aque feruentis proiecta est, quam penam color luteus corporis mei declarauit. In hiis penis obiecta michi sunt a demonibus peccata mea, leuitates et negligentie, quas in ordine committens paruipendebam. A quibus per flagella ferrea tam grauem et tam intolerabilem accepi disciplinam, ut nullum uas eneum illarum penarum pondus sustinere sufficeret, immo contracta et quasi in puluerem comminuta nequaquam subsisteret. Cumque omnipotens Deus ex iustitia sua me saluare non posset neque ex nimia sua misericordia dampnare uellet, ad corpus me redire iussit, ut, quanta pena debeatur peccantibus, tam uerbo quam exemplo nuntiem uiuentibus". Confessus est postea idem conuersus se quosdam tam ex monachis quam ex conuersis in locis iam dictis penarum uidisse eadem peccata actitare, que uel in seculo uel in monasterio fecerant nec fuerant confessi. Quos secrete et singillatim ad abbatem ducens eisque que uiderat obiciens ad ueram adduxit penitentiam. Uiuit enim adhuc ille Walterus, uir bonus et religiosus, et ab eo tempore quo reuixit corpus suum cruciare et conscientiam suam accusare non cessans. De quo que dicta sunt audiens Walewanus conuersus in Hemmenrode, homo, cui propter sanctitatem uite merito credendum est, locum adiit et fratrem Walterum requisiuit et inuenit. Ex cuius ore uniuersa que dicta sunt audiens, — non enim ei suffecit testimonium aliorum — michi omnia per ordinem recitauit.

Ut enim taceam de peccatoribus et adulteris, etiam innocentes, qui nil peccauerunt, peccata minima post mortem inpediunt.
