  • #1558 : Devil as servant I. The chamberlain of a knight’s court is the devil in disguise and has been lying in wait for many years for his master to fail to say the “Ave Maria,”at which time he would finally have power over the man. A holy man exposes the chamberlain and drives the devil away. The knight falls on his knees to ask forgiveness for his sins. Var.: A demon in human form serves a knight faithfully; he helps his master across a river as he is being pursued by his enemies and he obtains the milk of a lionness for the knight’s sick wife. He finally betrays himself, however, through his knowledge of the moon’s age.
