(Fr.) L’aumône faite par vanité n’aide pas. Après sa mort, un riche apparaît à sa femme et lui dit qu’il se trouve en enfer. La femme, étonnée, lui demande le motif car il avait été un homme hospitalier et avait toujours fait des aumônes. Le damné dit qu’il les avait faites par vanité et non par vraie charité.
(It.) L’elemosina fatta per vanagloria non giova. Un ricco dopo morto apparve a sua moglie e le disse che si trovava all?Inferno. La moglie, meravigliata, gli chiese il motivo poichè era stato un uomo ospitale e aveva fatto sempre elemosine. Il dannato disse che le aveva fatte per vanagloria e non per vera carità.
