(En.) A Matrona asked Rabbi Joshua what God has been doing since Creation. The reply was: " He pairs people." The Matrona then ordered a number of male slaves to marry female slaves, thinking that she could do the same as God. The next morning they returned, one with the head broken, one with the eyes scratched and so on, and she recognised that God knows better how to match them. The Rabbi also told her that God makes ladders, one to go up and the other to go down, to become poor and to become rich. (Gaster, pp. 55-56)

(Fr.) Une matrone romaine demande à Rabbi Joshua à quoi s’occupe le Créateur depuis la Création. Celui-ci lui répond : " Il assortit les couples." La matrone, pensant qu’elle peut faire aussi bien que Dieu, rassemble mille esclaves de chaque sexe et les marie entre eux. Le lendemain, ils reviennent l’un avec la tête fracturée, l’autre avec l'oeil blessé, le troisième avec la jambe cassée, etc... La matrone admet que Dieu sait s’y prendre mieux qu’elle. Rabbi Joshua lui raconte également que Dieu construit des échelles, les uns montant et devenant riches, les autres descendant et devenant pauvres.
