(En.) The son of Hananya joined a band of robbers and betrayed them to one of the great men of Rome. They found it out and killed him. In the funeral oration his father delivered, he tried no comfort but recognised that th death of his son had been deserved.When Rabbi Hananya was informed of the news that he had been condemned to death by fire for studying the Law he quoted the verse Deut.32,4. The wife then asked what punishment was dreed for her and they answered " Death by the sword" . To the daughter they said she was to work on the Sabbath. For each of these they found appropriate verses in the Bible in acknowledgment of God’s righteous judgment. When Rabbi Hananya was brought out to be burned his daughter cried because he was condemned to be burned and he said:" Is it not better that I should be burned in a fire that can be blown out than in the Eternal Fire?" Ans she said: " I cry also for the Law which is burned with thee." And he replied: " The Law is fire and fire never consumes fire; the parchment may burn but the words will float on the air. He who will arise in the days to come will visit my blood upon the heads of these men and punish them for the persecution of the Law." (Gaster,pp 66-67)

(Fr.) Martyre de Rabbi Hanania ben Tardion. Tout d’abord il perd son fils qui s’était joint à une bande de voleurs, les avait dénonçés et avait été tué en représailles; en citant des versets de la Torah, il accepte la décision de Dieu. Lorsqu’on vient le conduire au bûcher, et également châtier sa femme et sa fille, parce qu’il a enfreint la loi et étudié la Torah, il cite des versets reconnaissant la justice de Dieu. A sa fille pleurant sur son sort, il assure qu’il vaut mieux brûler dans un feu qui s’éteint que dans le feu éternel. Et lorsque sa fille pleure sur la Torah qui brûle avec lui, il l’assure que même si le parchemin brûle, les lettres et les mots flottent dans l’air et survivent. Car la Torah est elle-même un feu, et un feu ne peut être dévoré par un autre feu. Lorsque le Messie viendra, il punira les hommes d’avoir persécuté la Torah et rachètera le prix de son sang.

Une partie de cette histoire mise en poème est lue chaque année à Yom Kippour et le 9 ab, jour de la destruction du Temple ~ Une version plus détaillée du martyre y est racontée et rapportée dans ce manuscrit aux numéros 288 et 289..
