(En.) When Akiba saw Bar Koziba he declared him to be the Messiah. He had a large army of 80.000 and he had 200.000 from whom one finger was ut off. He was told by the sages not tu mutilate the peopl anymore and they advised him to recruit onlysuch men who riding on horses could uproot trees. And they got 200.000 in this manner. He also said like Bar-Deroa " Do not help us O Lord and do not subdue us" and he sinned by so speaking. Adrianus besieged Bet-Tur for three years without being able to conquer it and he almost gave up. Eleazar Hamudai fasted daily, and prayed to God that the town might not be taken. A Kuthean asked Adrianus to wait and see what he could do, and he went up and pretended to whisper into the ear of Eleazar ,who was the uncle of Bar Koziba. On being askedd what they had ben whispering the Kuthean said: " Whatever I say I shall be killed so I may as well say the thruth"; so he replied that Eleazar had whispered to him that he might hand the town over to the Romans. So Bar Koziba asked Eleazar what he had said to the Khutean and Eleazar answered :" nothing" Bar Kosiba enraged, kicked Eleazar and killed him and a voice said:" Oh you false sheperd who leaves the sheep! Thou hast killed R.Eleazar the right arm and the eye of Israel and thine arm shall be cut off and thine eye blinded." Bet-Tur was captured and Bar Koziba was slain and a snake was found around his body. The horses waded up to their bellies in blood and the brains of 300 chilkdren were found on one stone, one child only escaping, Shimeon ben Gamliel. They made a hedge of the dead f Bet-Tur eighteen miles square around the vineyards of Adrianus and the cause of destruction in that place was, that men used to intercept the pilgrims to Jerusalem and keep them there, and were accustomed to obtain possession of the people by false pretences. (Fr.) Lorsque Rabbi Akiba vit Bar Koziba, il déclara qu’il était le Messie. Il avait sous ses ordres 200.000 hommes dont le doigt avait été coupé pour tester leur endurance et leur force. Les sages lui suggérèrent de cesser cette mutilation, et d’enrôler les hommes capables de déraciner des arbres tout en restant à cheval. Il obtint ainsi une autre armée de 200.000 hommes. Mais il commit le péché d’orgueil et déclara qu’il n’avait pas besoin du Seigneur. L’empereur Hadrien assiégea Bet-Tur pendant trois ans sans parvenir à la conquérir et fut sur le point de renoncer. Mais un Samaritain lui proposa alors d’essayer la ruse. Il s’approcha de Rabbi Eléazar Hamoudai en train de prier pour la sauvegarde de la ville et fit semblant de lui chuchoter quelques mots à l’oreille. Capturé par Bar Koziba, alors qu’on lui demandait de rapporter la conversation entre Rabbi Eléazar et lui-même, il répondit qu’il serait tué de toute façon et donc qu’il dirait la vérité, que Eléazar était prêt à livrer la ville aux Romains. Bar Koziba demanda à Rabbi Eléazar, qui était son oncle, ce qu’il avait dit, et celui-ci lui répondit : " rien" . Mais il ne le crut pas et le tua. Une voix se fit entendre du ciel et annonça la mort prochaine de Bar Koziba, car il était " un faux berger" . Ce fut la chute de Bet-Tur dans un terrible bain de sang, où ne furent épargnés ni femmes ni enfants.

Récit plus détaillé de la chute de Bethar que dans l’exemple 75. Les circonstances tragiques de la chute de la ville et le massacre qui s’ensuivit donnent lieu dans le Talmud et les midrachim à des lamentations poignantes, proches de celles écrites lors de la chute de Jérusalem. Cette défaite définitive constitue le véritable début de l’exil et la fin de l’indépendance des juifs sur leur terre pour deux mille ans.
