(En.) Story of the man who tried Hillel’s patience by asking him irrelevant questions, in the hope of angering him and therby winning a wager of 400 zuzim. The first question was:" Why are not the heads of the Babylonians round?" and the answer:" Because they have no clever midwives." The second question, put after an hours delay, was:" Why are the eyes of the inhabitants of Tadmor small?" The answer was:" Because they live in caves." At the end of another hour, the third question was put. " Why are the feet of the inhabitants of Afriki flat?" and the reply was:" Because they live in swamps.’ Hillel did not lose patience after all. (Gaster, p.72)

(Fr.) Histoire d’un homme qui voulut éprouver la patience bien connue de Hillel et fit un pari de 400 zuzim (pièces de monnaie) avec son ami. Arrivé devant la maison de Hillel, qui se préparait et se lavait avant le sabbath, il l’appela à grands cris. Hillel s’enveloppa de son manteau et sortit à sa rencontre. L’homme lui posa cette question : " Pourquoi les Babyloniens n’ont-ils pas la tête ronde ?" Hillel lui répondit : " Parce que leurs sage-femmes ne sont pas assez expérimentées." Par deux fois encore, il lui posa des questions sans signification et Hillel ne perdit pas patience.
