(En.) King Antoninus was a friend of Rabbi Jehuda-ha-Nassi. The King went to visit him by an underground passage and the two servants who accompanied him were always killed, lest through them the people should get to know that he had friendly intercourse with the Rabbi. He also gave strict orders that no one should be with the Rabbi at the time. Once he met Hanina ben Hama there, but Rabbi Jehuda said that he could be trusted. The King ordered him to call the attendant who had been killed. When Hanina saw what had happened, he prayed to God and the attendant came to life again. The King was greatly astonished and said:" It’s wonderful that even the smallest amongst you is able to bring the dead to life." Once Antoninus asked the Rabbi what he should do since he wanted his son to be his successor and he also wished to exempt Tiberias from taxes for one year, and but it was not lawful to promulgate two decrees within one year.Rabbi Jehuda placed one man on the shoulders of another and gave him a bird which he was to let fly, thereby suggesting that the king’s son should promulgate the decredd freeing the people from taxes. Another time Antoninus asked him what he should do to prevent the nobles from rebelling against him, and the Rabbi took him to the garden and everyday pulled out one plant. Another time he wanted to know what he should do with his daughter who had misbehaved herself, and the Rabbi sent him a plant the name of which meant " spare her" and this was the way in which they used to communicate with one another. (Fr.) L’empereur Antonin était un grand ami de Rabbi Yehuda Hanassi. (Président du Sanhedrin, l’assemblée des sages). Il venait régulièrement le voir en secret pour prendre conseil et étudier la Torah. Un tunnel reliait sa maison à celle de Rabbi Yehuda et il se faisait accompagner par deux esclaves qu’il tuait de sa main une fois arrivé à destination. Il exigeait également que personne n’assiste à ces entretiens. Un jour, il rencontra chez Rabbi Yehuda Rabbi Hanina ben Hama, et fut très en colère, mais Rabbi Yehuda lui dit qu’on pouvait lui faire confiance, car " il n’était pas un simple humain" , voulant dire par là qu’il était un ange. Antonin voulant le tester, l’envoya chercher son esclave. Les deux rabbins ignoraient les habitudes d’Antonin et Rabbi Hanina fut effrayé de trouver l’esclave mort. Il se mit à prier et l’esclave revint à la vie. L’empereur fut très impressionné et dit: " Même le plus humble d’entre vous peut ramener un mort à la vie!" Antonin et Rabbi Yehuda avaient entre eux un code qui leur permettait de se comprendre. Un jour l’empereur lui demanda conseil, car il voulait faire de son fils son successeur et également libérer la ville de Tibériade des impôts. Or il ne pouvait faire passer qu’un seul décret par an. Rabbi Yehuda mit un homme sur les épaules d’un autre en lui donnant à la main un oiseau qu’il ferait s’envoler, voulant dire par là qu’il nomme son fils à sa suite et que ce dernier libèrerait Tibériade. Une autre fois, il lui demanda comment juguler la révolte des nobles contre lui, et Rabbi Yehuda déracina chaque jour une plante de son jardin, lui suggérant d’éliminer les nobles un par un. Une autre fois encore, il lui demanda comment se conduire avec sa fille qui était adultère, et Rabbi Yehuda lui envoya une plante dont le nom signifiait :" Epargne-la" .
