(En.) Of the sixty dinars which a man earned he spent twenty for food, twenty for house and twenty he left to his children. Rabbi Meir said a calligrapher used to earn six " selaim" , whereof he spent two on food, two on the house, two he gave away in alms to the poor and had nothing left for his children, saying: " If they be good, God will help them and if they be bad why should I leave money to the ennemies of God?" (Gaster,p.100)

(Fr.) Rabbi Meïr racontait qu’un scribe gagnait six " selaïm" . Il en utilisait deux pour sa nourriture, deux pour l'entretien de sa maison, et les deux derniers, il les donnait aux pauvres sans rien laisser à ses enfants. Quand on le questionnait sur ce point, il répondait: " S’ils se conduisent en justes, Dieu les aidera, et s’ils se conduisent mal, pourquoi aiderais-je des ennemis de Dieu?"
