(En.) Rabbi Joshua ben Hananya owned to having been taught a proper lesson by a widow and a child. He was invited to dine at her house and ate all she set before him. At the third course she gave him a dish of very salted food, so as to make him leave at least some of it for other members of the household.-On another occasion whilst he was walking in the middle of a field he was rebuked and told that he was walking on a footpath trodden out by trespassers like himself. He then got water to drink from a girl and said she was like Rebecca, but she retorted that he did not act like Eliezer. He asked her how far it was to the next town and was told that there was a long road which was short and a short which was long. The short way lay through vineyards and fields very difficult to get through and was therefore the longer.The long one was the high road and was an easy walk and therefore the shorter. Seeing her carrying a covered dish he asked what was inside and she retorted that it was covered so as not to be seen by others. (Gaster, pp 103-104)

(Fr.) Rabbi Joshua racontait qu'il avait reçu une leçon d'une femme, d'une jeune fille et d'un jeune garçon. Invité à dîner chez une veuve, il engloutit tout ce qu'on lui présenta. Alors elle lui apporta un troisième plat très salé de façon à ce qu'il laisse de la nourriture pour les autres. Un autre jour, il marchait sur un sentier au milieu d'un champ et une jeune fille lui dit que ce sentier était devenu sentier à force d'avoir été piétiné par des voleurs comme lui. Il demanda à une autre jeune fille de lui donner de l'eau . Elle lui en apporta pour lui ainsi que pour son âne. Il la compara à notre mère Rebecca, mais elle lui répondit que lui ne pouvait se comparer à Eliezer. Lorsqu'il demanda à un jeune garçon le meilleur chemin pour aller à la ville, il lui dit qu'il y avait une route longue qui était courte et une courte qui était longue. Celle qui était courte passait par des vignes et des champs pierreux difficiles à traverser, et l'autre était facile mais faisait tout le tour. Rabbi Joshua embrassa le jeune garçon en se félicitant de l'intelligence des fils d'Israël. Il rencontre un petit garçon avec un objet couvert et qui refuse de le dévoiler.
