The executioner removed the wet sponges from the Rabbi's chest, after being converted to Judaism, and then threw himself into the midst of the flames and shared the martyr's fate. (a detailed description) (Gaster, p.111)

(Fr.) Description détaillée du martyre et de la mort de Rabbi Hananya ben Teradion. Il fut enveloppé dans un rouleau de la Loi et brûlé vif. Son bourreau, après s'être converti au judaïsme sous son influence, lui enleva les éponges humides qui le faisiaient mourir plus lentement et après lui avoir demandé s'il obtiendrait le paradis, sauta dans les flammes et partagea son martyre.
