SummaryRésuméZusammenfassungSommarioResumen:
(En.) From the sayings of Walter Map. A hind, fleeing from the sight of hunters, veered into the courtyard of a certain wealthy man, and stood near the crib amongst the cattle. One of the cows said to her, "The cowherd is coming, and when he sees you, he will kill you." The hind responded, "I do not fear the cowherd, for he is blind." The cowherd came and placed food before the cattle, and not seeing the deer, he walked on past. Again, the cow said to the hind, "The bailiff is coming, and he will kill you." But she responded, "I do not fear the bailiff, for that one can see a little, but not very well." The bailiff came and shouted to the cowherd, "How are the cattle?" He said, "Excellent." After going in and sifting their food as if to encourage them to eat, the bailiff left. A third time, the cow said to the hind, "Our lord is coming, and when he sees you, he will kill you." The hind exclaimed, "May it not be so! May it not be so! May the lord of the manor never come here. Nothing can escape his eyes." As the day was gloaming, the lord said to his servant, "Light a lamp. I am going to see my cattle." Then he came in and went up to each and every cow. He shook their food and ran his hand along their backs, as if cherishing or caressing them. Calling each by name, he encouraged them to eat. Coming to the end, where the hind was standing in a corner, he exclaimed, "What are you doing here, O hind, amongst my cattle? You are subject to the penalty of death." And immediately after the sentence was pronounced, he executed her. From this it is plainly evident that the lord of the manor sees more clearly than others.
(Fr.)
