(En.) A certain man having a very old father was exceedingly severe towards him, as much in matters of food as in clothing, but most frequently he upbraided him with harsh words. It happened in the wintertime, while the father was lying on his little cot and an even colder gust of wind afflicted the old man's already cold limbs, that he cried out to his son: "My dearest son. For the love of God, pity me, who sired you, who brought you up, and who loved you as I love my own soul. Indeed, I am dying from the cold. Son! Cover the limbs of your father." The son upbraided his father and told him to be quiet. He said to his own son: "Go, throw that sack over him." The boy, taking hold of the sack, cut it into two parts. He threw one half over his grandfather, the other he set aside. His father said to him, "Why have you done this?" His son said to him, "Thus will I do to you when you are old. You are very harsh with your own father, and you hardly wanted to cover him with that filthy sack. I was taught by you; I will be very harsh towards you and scarcely will I cover you with half of the sack!"

(Fr.) Un homme qui avait un père très âgé était extrêmement sévère envers lui, tant pour la nourriture que pour le vêtement, mais le plus souvent il le réprimandait avec des mots durs. En hiver, alors que le père était couché sur son petit lit et qu'un coup de vent encore plus froid affligeait les membres déjà froids du vieil homme, il cria à son fils : "Mon très cher fils. Pour l'amour de Dieu, ayez pitié de moi, qui vous ai engendré, qui vous ai élevé, et qui vous ai aimé comme j'aime ma propre âme. En effet, je meurs de froid. Mon fils ! Couvre les membres de ton père." Le fils réprimanda son père et lui dit de se taire. Il dit à son propre fils : "Va, jette ce sac sur lui." Le garçon, se saisissant du sac, le coupa en deux parties. Il en jeta une moitié sur son grand-père, l'autre fut mise de côté. Son père lui dit : "Pourquoi as-tu fait cela ?" Son fils lui répondit : "C'est ainsi que je te traiterai quand tu seras vieux. Tu es très dur avec ton propre père, et c'est à peine si tu as voulu le couvrir de ce sac immonde. J'ai été instruit par toi ; je serai très dur envers toi et à peine te couvrirais-je de la moitié du sac !".

Quidam habens patrem decrepitum durissime habuit se erga eum, tam in uestimentis quam in uictualibus, sed et uerbis duris increpabat eum sepissime. Accidit autem hiemali tempore, cum iaceret in lectulo et frigida senis membra frigidior tempestas aeris constringeret ut clamaret ad filium: "Karissime fili. Pro amore Dei miserere mei qui te genui, qui te nutriui, qui te dilexi ut animam meam. Morior enim frigore. Operi, fili, membra patris tui." Ille autem increpans eum ut taceret, dixit filio suo: "Vade, iacta super eum saccum illum." Ille autem, apprehendens saccum, scidit in duas partes. Vnam iactauit super auum suum, alteram reseruauit. Cui pater: "Cur sic fecisti?" Ait ei filius: "Sic faciam tibi cum senueris. Tu durissimus es patri tuo, et uix uili sacco eum tegere uoluisti. Ego doctus a te, tibi durissimus ero et uix medietate sacci contegam? te."
