Quidam clericus diuina gracia inspirante ob peccatorum suorum cumulum contritus, peccata sua in scripta redegit. Qui cum coram sacerdote peccata sua detegeret, et pre multitudine lacrimarum ueniens ad tercium horribile legere non posset, supplicauit sacerdoti ut pro eo legeret. Qui suscipiens cedulam, omnia peccata inuenit rasa. Ex hoc patet beneficium confessionis.
C'est le seul exemplaire de la partie survivante de la collection à être moralisé explicitement.
Les récits concernant l'efficacité de l'office de pénitence abondent dans les premiers exempla de la fin de la période médiévale. Ce récit de l'effacement de la liste des péchés est l'un des plus populaires en ce qui concerne le thème de l'efficacité de la pénitence.

- #1202 : Confession, written, disappears. (Var.) a.) Confession disappears. A scholar is unable to say his confession because of extreme contrition. The abbot has him write it on paper. Devil reveals unconfessed sin. 1. A demon publicly announces the unconfessed sin of a man who hasjust returned from confession, but the man’s having made a general confession forces the devil to deny his original claim. 2. A demon reveals that a girl is no longer a virgin, but her confession makes him deny his original claim. 3. A archbishop is raising the Host when a man is possessed by the devil and accuses a monk of a sin; the monk then confesses. 4. A devil, speaking through a woman, tells a lay brother of his unconfessed sins. The latter confesses and the devil is no longer aware of these sins. (See also: 1569).
