SAINT NICOLAS ET L’EMPRUNTEUR MALHONNETE. 1/ Un chrétien emprunta de l’argent à un juif et lui donnant comme garant saint Nicolas. 2/ A la date où il devait rembourser, il tendit au juif un bâton creux plein d’argent. 3/ Il le reprit aussitôt et jura devant le juge qu’il l’avait payé. 4/ Mais une charrette se renversa sur lui et son argent se répandit. 5/ Le juif retrouva son argent et se convertit; il eut de la dévotion pour saint Nicolas qui lui avait été donné comme garant.

#3469 : Nicholas, St., as security. A Christian, who had borrowed from a Jew and named St. Nicholas as security, gave the Jew a staff filled with gold swearing that he was repaying more than he bad borrowed. On his way home the Christian died and the staff broke revealing that it was empty. The Jew asked St. Nicholas to restore the Christian to life to pay his debts. (See also: 2318, 2623, 3352).
