(Fr.) Un chevalier néglige de respecter les ordres d’un défunt. Pendant qu’il combattait contre les sarrasins, un chevalier de Charlemagne demanda à son beau-frère de vendre son cheval et d’en donner l’argent aux pauvres, au cas où il mourrait à la bataille. Le chevalier meurt, mais le beau-frère garde le cheval pour lui; après huit jours le chevalier lui apparaît en lui reprochant les peines qu’il avait souffert en purgatoire pour le cheval qui n’a pas été vendu. Il lui annonça qu’il sera mort dans la journée et sera condamné aux peines infernales.

(It.) Un cavaliere trascura di eseguire gli ordini di un defunto. Un cavaliere di Carlo Magno mentre combatteva contro i Saraceni chiese a suo cognato di vendere il suo cavallo e dare il ricavato ai poveri se fosse morto in battaglia. Il cavaliere morì, ma il cognato si tenne il cavallo e dopo otto giorni il cavaliere gli apparve rinfacciandogli le pene che aveva sofferto in Purgatorio per il cavallo non venduto e gli annunciò che sarebbe morto in giornata e sarebbe stato condannato alle pene infernali.

#1931 : Executor, faithless, of Charlemagne’s knight. A knight fighting against the Saracens in Spain with the Emperor Charles, left at his death his horse to the poor, and appointed someone as his executor. The executor, however, kept the horse. The dead knight appeared to the executor telling him that the executor’s action had delayed his (the knight’s) ascent to heaven. The next day a flock of black crows seize the executor, raise him in the air and let him fall on a stone, breaking his neck.
