Quartus amor est carnalis et est corruptivus, in nobis multa mala facit. Primo inducit ad Dei abnegationem.

Unde in Vita beati Basilii legitur quod quidam cuidam nobili serviens cujus filiam adamavit supramodum, quam non valens decipere donis, blandiciis vel sollicitationibus. Habito autem a quodam incantatore consilio et litera que demoni dirigebatur; qui cum missa litera quadam nocte ad cimiterium judeorum venit. Ad cujus pravam invocationem dyabolus apparens et litera sibi ostensa, declaravit ei omnia que in corde habebat. Cui demon dixit : "Si vis ut tuam compleam voluntatem, fac mihi literam vel scriptum manu tua propria in quo Christum abneges et ejus perfectionem necnon omnium sanctorum ejus. ” Quo facto dyabolus cor puelle in tam magnum amorem juvenis ardere fecit, ut prostrata in terram clamare cepit: "Pater, miserere mei quia nimis crucior pre amore tui scutiferi. ” Quod pater attendens pre dolore ejulans dicebat: "Heu me ! quid accidit filie mee misere. Nam ego te disponebam conjungere sponso celesti et per te salvari putabam, et tu econverso in amorem lascivie insanisti. ” Tunc illa amplius clamare cepit: "Nisi dederis quod opto moriar. ” Habito autem consilio ipsam maritavit eidem cum multa substantia. Et quia ille dederat se dyabolo missam non audiebat nec signum crucis videre poterat et minus eo munire. Quod cum uxori notificatum fuisset et ille negaret, illa ait: "Si vis ut tibi credam, ambo simul intremus ecclesiam et pariter signabis te signo crucis. ” Videns ille quod latere non poterat, narravit ei totum ordinem rei geste, ac illa respondit ingemiscens:” confide frater de misericordia Dei quia potens est Deus te justum facere. ” Quem ducens ad beatum Basilium ei omnia per ordinem est confessus, et facta absolutione eum benigne exhortans ei tradidit signum sancte crucis, quod dyabolus visibiliter rapere conatus est de manu beati Basilii, clamavit: "O Basili tu prejudicas mihi, nam ego non ivi ad eum sed ipse potius venit ad me Christum negando, et sic mihi professus est. ” Quem beatus Basilius in domo recludens et signo crucis muniens, licet per quatuor dies horribiles demonum illusiones passus est, tamen die quarto virtute sanguinis Christi quem continue sibi invocaverat liberatur, in presentia multorum existens subito cedula apparuit in manu beati Basilii aperta . Quem ad ecclesiam reducens misericordiam Dei predicavit.

A archbishop is raising the Host when a man is possessed by the devil and accuses a monk of a sin; the monk then confesses. 4.
