Како подобает боятися суда божия милосердый некий царь научи. Писано есть, яко един некий царь никогда же в животе своем весел бысть, ниже когда осклабися. Князи же его молиша царя того брата, да известится от брата, о чем смущается и скорбит и в непрестанной печали. И слыша царь рече, яко во оный день известит ему. Повеле же сотворити ров великий и повеле углия горящаго до половины насыпати и над тем рвом поставити престол ветхий и струхлявый. Над престолом повеле повесить на тончайшей нити мечь острый голый, пред ним же повеле поставити стол со множеством различных брашен и драгаго вина. Призвав же брата и посади его на оном ветхом и струхлявом месте престольнем над оным углием и четырех мужей з голыми мечи окрест его постави: единаго позади, другаго против сердца и дву от обоих стран, и всем повеле мечи ко брату каждому от себе приложити. По сем повеле мусику привести и играти. И рече брату: «Яждь, пий, веселися и радуйся». И рече брат ко царю: «Како имам веселитися, яко отвсюду обстоим лютыми: аще воззрю на дол, тамо огнь, аще горе — оттуду мечь хощет главу мою отсещи, ниже на престоле сем обратитися, зане разрушится, и аз впаду во огнь. Со стран же отовсюду мечьми хотят мя пронзити. И ни о чем же лишь ныне, точию яко вижю всеконечную мою погибель». Тогда рече царь брату: своему: «Яко же ты, зря сия вся пристроенная не к погибели твоей, но к наказанию, пити и ясти не хощеши, ниже веселитися можеши, тако и аз имам всегда пред очима моима: аще позрю умом моим горе, вижу тамо судию моего, иже мя судити хощет, сведый все мое число дел и словес и мыслей, и вижу вся грехи моя, их же пред богом сотворих и за тыи лютый и ярый ответ прияти. Аще ли позрю долу, помышляю огнь адский и муку лютую вечную и всих осужденных, с ними же и аз буду осужден, аще во гресе едином смертном отиду. Аще позрю пред ся, помышляю смерть мою, к ней же на всяк час приближаюся. И не вем же ни часа, ниже места, како и где ми будет конец. Аще позрю на шуе, присмотряю, иже во дни и в нощи демониврази ищут душу мою и запинают избавлению моему; аще позрю на десно, вижю ангелы божия, иже ми благия мысли и благую волю подают, их же аз не приемлю и не творю. И егда сия вся яже о мне помы шляю, никако в мире сем прелестней и над подкладающем престоле моем весел могу быти».
