Legitur in Vitas Patrum quod cum quidam Arsenius existens in honoribus rogaret Deum pro salute sua, responsum est ei: "Si vis salvari, fuge mundum qui est tanquam mare magnum in quo sunt quatuor venti: vanus timor, vana spes, vanum gaudium. Et alii quatuor collaterales scilicet: prosperitas, adversitas, gracia et malicia. Et etiam desertum de quo exeunt quatuor bestie: ursus voluptatis, leo superbie, pardus avaricie, lamie malicie. Retinet etiam sibi aliquos serpentes concupiscentie oculorum, scorpionem concupiscentie carnis, dipsus superbie vite. Est etiam bellum in quo locus, status, tempus, infirmitas, peccata, hostes multi fortes contrarii, subtiles veloces, propinqui, invisibiles, credules, sapientes, experti stant contra hominem. ”
