The throne of Solomon was entirely made of gold , having 33 steps upon which were various animals.12 golden lions, and 2 golden bears stood up on each step and over the throne was a kind of canopy. In the midst of this was a golden chain and from the chain hung a golden dove who held in his beak a golden crown in which was a precious stone which illuminated the whole world. When the King ascended the throne the lions lifted up their paws and on each paw a verse out of the Bible was written, suggestive of the carrying out of the Law and urging him to judge uprightly.Facing the lions there were 12 golden eagles. On the first step of the one side there was a golden lion and on the other a golden ox; on the second a golden bear and a golden lamb; on the third a panther and a baby; on the fourth an eagle and a hart; on the fifth a peacock and a cock; and on the sixth an hawk and a dove. When the king ascended the throne wheels turned and he was assisted by the various animals to the top. Then a golden dove opened an ark and took out the scroll of the Law, and placed it before him. From that seat he used to judge the whole world. (Gaster, p.81)

(Fr.) Le trône du roi Salomon était entièrement recouvert d’or. Il comprenait 33 marches et de chaque côté on pouvait monter 6 marches. Sur chaque marche se tenaient des animaux en or. Au milieu il y avait une chaîne en or à laquelle était suspendue une colombe en or qui tenait en son bec une couronne en or sur laquelle brillait une pierre qui illuminait le monde. Lorsque le roi montait sur la première marche, un mécanisme se mettait en marche et les animaux aidaient le roi à monter les marches et à s’asseoir sur le trône. Alors la colombe ouvrait un petit coffre d'où l’on sortait un rouleau de la Torah, et on le plaçait devant le roi pour lui rappeler qu’il devait juger selon la Loi. Et c’est ainsi que le roi Salomon jugeait le monde entier.

Cette description du trône de Salomon est reprise dans plusieurs midrashim avec des versions un peu différentes. La légende raconte que le roi Nabuchodonozor emmena le trône à Babylone, mais lorsqu’il essaya d’y monter, le lion d’or le fit tomber. Plus tard, le roi Darius l’emmena en Médie. Lorsqu’Assuérus voulut s’y asseoir, il fut également mis à terre par le lion d’or. Il ne tenta jamais plus de s’y asseoir, mais en fit construire un semblable, et c’est à cette occasion qu’il donna une fête qui nous est racontée dans le livre d’Esther.
