(En.) Rabbi Huna had four hundred vats of wine, and they all turned into vinegar. Then came the sages to him and said:" Examine your deeds and see wether you have committed any wrong, for no doubt the Lord is punishing you in this world so that you may not lose any of the reward in the world to come." Then Rabbi Huna replied that if anyone knew anything against him, he shoul tell him so. Then they told him that " it has been told that he didn’t pay his gardeners their wages." Then Rabbi Huna said:" That would be stealing, but I am not guilty. I am ready to take an oath that I have paid their wages." Some say the vinegar turned back into wine; others say that it remained vinegar, but the price of vinegar rose so high that it was sold at the price of wine. (Fr.) Rabbi Huna possédait quatre cents tonneaux de vin, et tous se transformèrent en vinaigre. Les sages vinrent le voir et lui conseillèrent de vérifier s’il n’avait pas commis de péché, car le Seigneur le punissait certainement ici-bas pour lui permettre de recevoir sa récompense dans le monde futur. Il leur répondit que si quelqu’un avait quelque chose à lui reprocher, qu’il le dise ouvertement. Ils lui dévoilèrent alors qu’il se disait qu’il n’avait pas payé leurs gages à ses jardiniers. Rabbi Huna se récria et dit:" Ce serait du vol. Je suis prêt à jurer que j’ai payé ces gages." ~ Les uns disent que le vinaigre redevint du vin. D’autres disent qu’il resta vinaigre, mais que le prix du vinaigre monta jusqu’à être aussi cher que celui du vin!
