(En.) A certain brother in the abbey at Gloucester was accustomed to ask those who occupied a higher rank never to nominate him for any office in the monastery. He would rehearse his reasoning for this saying: "As long as nobody names me to an activity of this sort, it will be possible for the sickness of which my heart is aware to escape the brothers' notice. But if it happens to be mentioned that you are placing me in such and such an office, immediately someone will say, under the pretense of love for me, 'We realize that he is both upright and wise and worthy of great honour. But something tells me to lament on his account because I cherish him so much.' And taking the opposite side, he will murmur into the ears of two or three: 'He is a flatterer; he does not love peace,' or something else that will contaminate all of that former praise. Whence it is said, 'But it has been tainted.' So, through this nomination it will happen that he of whom formerly no one thought anything except good things afterwards has something to be blamed for."

(Fr.) Un certain frère de l'abbaye de Gloucester avait l'habitude de demander à ceux qui occupaient un rang supérieur de ne jamais le nommer pour aucune charge dans le monastère. Il disait : "Tant que personne ne me nommera pour une fonction, il sera possible que la maladie qui se trouve dans mon coeur puisse échapper à l'attention des frères. Mais s'il arrive que je soit mentionnée et que vous me placiez dans telle ou telle charge, aussitôt quelqu'un dira, sous prétexte d'amour pour moi : "Nous savons qu'il est à la fois droit et sage et digne d'un grand honneur mais quelque chose me dit de me lamenter à son sujet parce que je le chéris tellement." Mais, prenant le parti opposé, cette même personne murmurera à l'oreille d'autres personnes ceci : « C'est un flatteur ; il n'aime pas la paix », ou quelque chose comme ça, qui entache tous les éloges précédents. D'où il est dit, 'Mais il a été souillé.' Ainsi, par cette nomination, il arrivera que celui à qui autrefois personne ne pensait quelque chose à part du bien, ensuite aura quelque chose à se reprocher. »

Frater quidam in abbatia Glouc' supplicare solebat hiis qui in maiori loco constituebantur ne aliquando nominarent eum ad susceptionem alicuius obediencie. Et reddebat huiusmodi racionem dicens: "Quamdiu nemo me nominat ad negocium huiusmodi, latere poterit fratres infirmitas illa cuius mihi conscium est cor meum. Si uero contingat mei mencionem fieri ut in illa uel illa constituas obediencia, statim dicet aliquis quasi sub dilectionis optentu: 'Scimus quia probus et sapiens est et dignus grandi honore. Sed aliquid monet me unde doleo propter illum, quia nimis illum diligo.' Et conuersus in partem alteram, stillabit in auribus /96r/ duorum uel trium: 'Adulator est; non amat pacem,' aut aliquid tale, quod omnem priorem inquinet laudem. Vnde dicitur: 'Set inquinatum.' Vnde per illam nominationem fit ut de quo prius nemo nisi bonum senciebat, postea habeat unde culpetur."
