(En.) Rabbi Johanan ben Zakai was asked by Rabbii Eleazar ben Arach permission to expound some of the mysteries of the creation. (Maase Merkaba) Rabbi Johanan dismounted from his ass, as angels might be present, and sat on a stone under an olive tree. Then Eleazar began to expound them and fire descended from heaven and the trees broke foth into song. Rabbi Johanan kissed Rabbi Eleazar on the head and said: " Blessed be the Lord, God of Israel, who gave to Abraham our father, a son like unto thee." Rabbi Joshua and Rabbi Jose, the priest, when they heard of it, tried to do the same. It happened to be the 17th day of Tammuz and the heavens became clouded and the ministering angels gathered there, llike people who come to a wedding feast. This was told by the rwo rabbis named to Rabbi Johanan and he said: " Blessed are ye and blessed are mine eyees which have seen in a dream you and me sitting on Mount Sinai and have heard a voice from heaven saying," Ascend,ascend! Large palaces are ready for you,large couches are ready for you and your pupils." (Gaster, p.73)

(Fr.) Rabbi Elazar ben Arach demanda à son maître Rabbi Johanan ben Zakai la permission de discuter des mystères de la création, (Maassei Merkava) Malgré ses réticences , il decendit de son âne car des anges pouvaient être présents, et s’assit sur une pierre sous un olivier. Lorsqu’ Eleazar commença à parler, un feu descendit du ciel et les arbres se mirent à chanter. Rabbi Johanan l’embrassa sur le front et s’écria : " Béni soit l’Eternel, Dieu d’Israël, qui a donné à notre père Abraham un tel descendant." Rabbi Joshua et Rabbi Yossi le grand-prêtre entendirent cette histoire et voulurent eux aussi discuter de ces mystères. Et les anges s’assemblèrent autour d’eux comme pour une cérémonie nuptiale. Lorsque cela fut rapporté à Rabbi Johanan, il s’écria : " Soyez bénis et soient bénis mes yeux qui m’ont vu assis en rêve avec mes disciples sur le mont Sinai et ont entendu une voix céleste nous invitant à monter au ciel, où des palais splendides nous attendent."
