(En.) The story of the weasel and the well. Once a young girl, beautifully dressed, lost herself in the desert on her way home. Getting very thirsty and seing a well with a rope and a bucket attached, she decended. When she had slaked her thirst she could not ascend, so she cried aloud. A man passing by, heard her cry and after assuring himself that she was not a demon he drew her out. Then he fell in love with her and wanted to marry her. She asked him who he was and he answered that he was a priest. Then she told him that she was of a noble family and that if he wished to marry her they must plefge their troth to each other and go ans ask her hand of her parents. They pledged their troth and she said:" Who will be witnesses?" At this moment a weasel passed and she said, " The heavens, the weasel, and the well will be our witnesses." Then they parted. She kept her troth and when her parents wanted to marry her to another man she behaved like one possessed of the demon, till the suitors ceased to ask for her hand. She kept her covenant with the man, but he forgot her and married another woman, by whom he had a boy. When the child was three months old the weasel came and strangled him and when aniother child was bon it fell into a well and was drowned. So his wife said to him:" The peculiar deaths of these children point to some extraordinary reason, what is it?" Then he told her the whole story and she said to him:" Go and take the part which has been given to thee by God!" So he went into the town and asked after the girl, and they told him that she was possessed of a demon, and he said:" I will take her none the less." When he saw her she behaved as usual. Then he mentioned to her the weasel and the well and she recognised him at once, married him, and they lived happily ever after. (Gaster, p.74)

(Fr.) Histoire du rat et du puits. Une jeune fille de bonne famille se perdit dans le désert. Mourant de soif, elle vit un puits avec une corde et descendit jusqu’au fond pour boire. Ne pouvant remonter, elle commença à crier et à pleurer. Un jeune homme qui passait l’entendit, et après avoir vérifié qu’il ne s’agissait pas d’un démon , il lui demanda de l’épouser et elle accepta; alors il la remonta hors du puits. Comme il voulait coucher avec elle, elle lui demanda qui il était et il lui répondit qu’il était prêtre. Elle lui dit qu’elle était elle-même une juive de bonne famille et qu’ils devaient d’abord se présenter à leurs parents et se marier avec un contrat officiel, et non pas se conduire comme des animaux. Elle exigea donc qu" ils s’engagent l’un à l’autre en attendant. Ce qu’ils firent, et elle dit : " Que le ciel, ce rat qui passe et le puits soient nos témoins !" Puis ils se séparèrent. La jeune fille fut fidèle à son engagement et refusa tous les partis qu’on lui proposait en se faisant passer pour possédée du démon. Le jeune homme, lui, oublia son serment et se maria à une autre femme. Il eut un premier fils qui, à l’âge de trois mois, fut étranglé par un rat. Le deuxième tomba dans un puits et se noya. Alors sa femme lui dit : " Ces morts sont si singulières qu’elles sont certainement une punition pour un de nos péchés." Le mari lui raconta toute l’histoire et elle le pressa de la quitter et de remplir son engagement. Il retrouva alors la jeune fille, se fit reconnaitre d’elle, et ils se marièrent, furent heureux et eurent beaucoup d’enfants qui devinrent des sages.
